Mónica Curado | Portugal 08 May 2021 A strict quality control in all laboratory steps, from the pre-analytical phase to microscopic observation, allows obtaining a stinky and high-quality diagnosis. Registration, verification, and validation of everything used in a laboratory is the best practice you can have. The introduction of slide digitization makes this control even tighter, but the potential uses of this technology for obtaining rapid and reliable diagnostics, with the possible use of AI tools, make it mandatory to pay attention to the use of high-quality reagents and equipment in all laboratory steps.

Mariana Barros | Portugal 11 May 2021 In a laboratory, it's always important to have good practices to maintain quality and improvement. This includes providing equipaments with regular maintenance and training to users, besides a good handling from workers through cleaning and care. Besides that, we need to make sure that the equipaments had updated software to keep up our work routine.

Karolina Wojcik | UK 13 May 2021 I have been working in the histology field for the last eight years. During this time, I have developed a various set of skills required to be a competent biomedical scientist with an analytical approach which works well within a team. I am a fully competent and trained specialist biomedical scientist in general aspects of the routine histopathology laboratory, i.e. simple biopsy transfer, embedding, microtomy, H&E quality control, special stains, immunohistochemistry, as well as highly specialised processing of the Mohs frozen section service. I have been awarded the IBMS specialist portfolio in cellular pathology, which allowed me to broaden my histopathology knowledge and keep up to date with the current innovative developments. I also have undertaken the Msc qualifciations at the University of Greenwich as part of my MSc studies to supplement my knowledge in cellular pathology techniques further. During my last five years at the current workplace, I was able to learn the various tasks needed for compliance with ISO 151:89 standards. Thus by successfully passing the ISO inspection and clearing non- conformities, I gained the required knowledge according to UKAS requirements. The tasks involved employing Qpulse management system to write and update existing SOPs, performing audits, creating and uploading new documents, clearing non-conformances promptly. I regularly attend quality forum meetings to keep up with the ISO requirements and to cascade it to junior members of staff. My QMS knowledge has also been topped up by completing the Quality system management module at university. This has allowed me to secure the role of a deputy of the Quality Lead for my department. The current arrangement (five days a week Mohs service provider), allows me to be working to a vast number of Mohs cases in tight turnaround time. This has proven an invaluable asset of timely and accurate working to a schedule of a frozen section Mohs surgery. Moreover, I have experience of working at two different NHS sites (Guy's and St. Thomas'), which further allowed me to develop the ability to plan and prioritise allocated work and be fully flexible to last-minute rota changes. I am heavily involved in various research projects in the laboratory. I had opportunities to present them in the previous three IBMS congresses. In 2015 IBMS Congress, I presented the immunohistochemistry research paper (Pan-cytokeratin markers for rapid frozen section immunocytochemistry from head and facial Mohs cases of basal cell carcinoma: A comparison and evaluation to determine the marker of choice). I am also a co-author of the research publication (New embedding and staining systems PrestoCHILL and Presto stainer for application in the advancement of Mohs micrographic surgery). In the last congress in 2017, I have won an innovation paper (Immunohistochemical detection of V600E BRAF mutation as a useful primary screening tool for malignant melanoma), which subsequently was published in the British Journal of Biomedical Science. I also presented this project during the Medlab conference in Barcelona in 2018. Afterwards, I washave also been invited as a speaker in Asia&Pacific Medlab conference in Singapore in March 2019. I believe that setting high standards and leading by example, will improve my role in the department and will further support the services that are already in place. Moreover, I am self-motivated, and I am always looking for quality and cost improvement opportunities. My knowledge and experience are kept up to date by performing CPD activities on an ePortfolio IBMS resources. The ongoing CPD tasks allow me to critically analyse and reflect my learning experiences and record the resulting benefits to my professional practice and development. I am a voluntary member of the London Region Cellular Pathology Discussion Group. By being an active member, I help to promote and develop cellular pathology through educational lectures, talks and seminars. As part of my MSc, I have studied the Managing Learning and Development in Healthcare module, which provided me with an insight and a different approach to education and improvement to the topics I have already undertaken previously. Furthermore, it would provide a benefit to the laboratory as I would be able to disseminate to junior members of staff. I believe my current arrangements in Viapath, one of the largest independent pathology providers, which creates an environment which empowers me to pursue my personal development further by allowing me to undertake the advanced diploma. Furthermore, Viapath fully supports the motivated and driven nature of my personality to perform to the best of my ability.

Jeyrroy Gabriel | United Kingdom 16 May 2021 In my current workplace, as well as being involved with routine diagnostics, we also get involved with research and innovation. This covers a broad range of topics including the development of a semi-automated melanin bleaching protocol to aid with the diagnosis of heavily pigmented lesions. As well as looking at identifying which haematoxylin subtype is the most optimal haematoxylin for the use as part of the Mohs frozen histological procedure, which in our study identified Carazzi's as performing the best. All this will assist with providing better results for the patient.

Craig Mackay | United Kingdom, Scotland 20 May 2021 Our direction within the Pathology Departments at Charles River is to move away from manual microtomes and move to more automated units predominantly to reduce repetitive strain to technicians working within these areas. With launching a project on this topic we tried and tested many of the market leaders that supply microtomes to the industry. Within that project CR Edinburgh coupled with Diapath to demo their Galileo automated microtome. The outcome of the project saw us develop a lasting relationship with Diapath and invest in several Galileo automated microtomes and selecting Diapath as one of our preferred supplier of Histology Equipment. Diapath continue to support our business with both a professional and friendly approach. Working with Diapath has been a pleasure with any challenges faced dealt with promptly and efficiently.
